The MYDAC II is the first digital-to-analog converter using MODR (Musically Optimized Digital Reconstruction). Designer Michael Yee’s digital reconstruction technology is software driven, executed with an FPGA (field programmable gate array), which effectively minimizes jitter and intercepts the digital signal as it comes into the DAC. Furthermore, the FPGA provides a proprietary pre-emphasis conditioning of the signal before the DAC chip (the DAC chipset is the Texas Instruments PCM1798, delta sigma) to remove the DAC’s effect on quantization error. After the DAC chip, an analog stage provides de-emphasis prior to output. MODR was developed to significantly improve the low-level resolution. Basically, it is a reconstruction technique that alters only the sub-quantization changes in the signal. MODR is highly optimized for musical signals. Bryston's new BDP-2 Digital Player adds more features and upgraded performance to the critically acclaimed BDP-1 – including more inputs for drives and network connections, larger library capability, eSATA internal hard drive capability, and increased speed with faster load times. With its multiple drive connections and computer control interface, the Bryston BDP-2 may look like a very 'technical' approach to playing music, but the sound is anything but mechanical.
Many digital playback systems incorporate an all-in-one approach to digital playback. These systems are burdened with performing all of the identified tasks of playing digital audio, including ripping content and managing storage in the same box that is struggling to play the audio files faithfully. Instead of opting for the usual 'Swiss army knife' multi-functional approach, Bryston broke the different tasks apart with the BDP-2 digital player and dedicated its efforts to the stages where it could bring the most value and performance.
All-in-one music servers have serious issues with noise and distortion, so Bryston totally separated the 'digital processing' side (playing music files) from the 'data management' (storage, handling, ripping) side of the equation. The Pandora is a vacuum tube based digital-to-analog converter with one USB and three SPDIF inputs.
